Sit and Stand Stroller - A Lightweight Double Buggy
65
One
thing many parents don’t think about when shopping for a twin stroller
is the weight of the stroller. A double buggy can weigh up to 40 lbs,
and it can be quite difficult to lift one in and out of a car
repeatedly. I’ve heard parents complain about the weight of their fancy
twin strollers. Some of them feel so burdened by the weight of their
fancy strollers that they end up buying a second cheaper stroller and
leaving the first one at home!
If
you are looking for a lightweight double stroller, check out the
specifications from each manufacturer for the model you’re thinking of
buying. You might be surprised by the weight variations between
strollers. Also, think about what you’re going to carry with you in the
stroller. You’ll probably have diapers, water, snacks, extra clothes,
etc, which will all add more weight to the stroller when you’re out and
about. This might mean that you’re lifting 50 lbs repeatedly! This can
be painful on your back.
If,
after browsing the major stroller brands, you think you want a lighter
stroller model, consider getting a sit and stand stroller. These are
good for families that have one infant and one toddler. Most styles of
sit and stand strollers have one regular stroller seat in the front for
the infant or toddler and a bench seat and standing platform on the back
for the older child. Because this type of double buggy only has one
full seat, it usually weighs less than a tandem or side by side style of
double buggy.
The
back platform of the sit and stand stroller has a harness, but still
requires a cooperative toddler in order to serve its purpose. A wiggly
toddler might not want to sit still on the bench seat or stand still on
the rear platform. Some children really like the feeling of being
engaged with their surroundings, as they can stand up and look around
them while you’re cruising along together.
The
biggest drawback of the sit and stand style of stroller is that only
one of the children—the one in the front seat—will be able to fall
asleep. The child in the back might get tired and cranky after a while
because they can’t rest in a regular padded seat. If you’ll be running
errands frequently and hoping both children can sleep soundly, a regular
double stroller might work better for you.
It
pays to do your homework before making any major purchase for your
family, and paying for a quality stroller is no exception. Find more

I think the sit and stand is a wonderful option if one of the children is older and objects to being "trapped" in a stroller. It can give the older child a chance to be a "big kid".
